Student Graphic Design exhibition – El Graphico Slamdown

We’re really excited to be attending this event next week!

Six graduating Diploma of Graphic Design students from Southern Queensland Institute of TAFE (SQIT) are invoking the power of Mexico’s famous luchador wrestlers in El Graphico Slamdown – an event to attract industry attention for their end of course exhibition.

To be held at Toowoomba’s Empire Theatre on November 22, El Graphico Slamdown will combine flamboyant showmanship with the spirit of competition.

The exhibition will be coordinated entirely by the students and is expected to attract more than 200 attendees, as part of a wider strategy to gain maximum industry exposure in a tight job market.

“While we are competing against each other to impress the judges and potential employers, we are also collaborating to ensure an unforgettable creation,” student Evan Dean said.

Graphic design student Sean Stallan-Stritch, who lobbied hard to get his El Graphico Slamdown theme accepted by the group, anticipates a memorable evening.

“You will see a range of original ideas expressed as hand-made media demonstrating the impact of graphic designs applied to publications, corporate branding, stationery and packaging,” Mr Stallan-Stritch said.

Visual arts graduate Jasmine Wrigglesworth said other elements of the installation will include wine labels, digital media and flash animation applications.

“We are putting in a lot of work – late nights and long hours to assemble something professional and unforgettable – based on previous exhibitions but unique and more adventurous,” Ms Wrigglesworth said.

The exhibition will also feature the works of eleven first-year Certificate IV in Graphic Design students.
